Nice.

by Kelley

in finding my happy

kind

I had already decided it was going to be a bad day.

Little to no sleep.

No time for a shower.

My fucking eyeliner didn’t go on straight on my left eye.

As we sat out the front of Boo’s school waiting for one of the aides to come and escort him to the classroom, I tried to keep him calm as kids sat on the school steps right near the car playing music.

‘It is inappropriate!’

‘I know, Buddy.  But it is not your job to tell them.’ I mentally pleaded for the aides to hurry.  These kids have never sat here before.  We park here as the drop off point because it is quiet.

Boo gets out of the car and walks over to the kids to tell them.

Jesus, fuck.

The aides are 10 minutes late to collect him.

The kids, quite rightly really, tell Boo to piss off and mind his own business, and Boo goes and stands in a corner – near the door  – but where I can’t see him.

FINALLY an aide rocks up and takes him inside.

Jesus fucking Christ.

I am now in peak mums-just-dropped-off-kids-traffic and it is bedlam.

Bitches cutting each other off, walking in between cars… pushing PRAMS IN FRONT OF MOVING VEHICLES!

I finally get to work and some fucker has stolen my carpark.

UNWRITTEN RULE… BUT MOTHERFUCKER.

Reach into the back and my bag has turned over and the contents has spilled all over the backseat and floor…

Breathe.  Just.  Fucking.  Breathe.

Walk towards the office with my bag, card to get in and my lunch – tumbler full of cordial – only one other guy in the empty car park, miles ahead of me… so late.

Fuck I hate people.  If it wasn’t for other people I would have been here ages ago.

Man I hate the fucking world.

I get to the door and the dude I saw miles ahead of me is standing there holding the door.

Smiling.

‘I saw you had your hands full.  I got halfway up the ramp and came back’

I was gobsmacked.

I started beaming.

‘You are so kind.  What a lovely thing to do.  Thank you’

‘No problem’

And he went in and up the stairs and I went up the lift and I had a good day.

Cause sometimes all it takes is just one kind gesture to turn around someones whole outlook.

Thanks, guy.

Just one tiny little thing to turn it all around. Good reminder to do that thing for someone else. I’ll be looking for opportunities today.

It doesn’t take much does it? I bet he didn’t even think of it again… But it made such an impact on the rest of my day. And look at me, writing a blog post a week after it happened. Hope you found an opportunity to change someone’s day. X

I’m surprised when people are surprised when I open a door for them but now it’s payback time and I pray for someone to open a damn door when I’m with the walker. The door either opens towards the walker or away from it and both are diabolical to deal with while not letting bags fall off or me tripping over the wheels. I blame you, if I hadn’t read that post about your nose op I might have already been to the specialist and had my balance back but I would open a door for you.

I loves me a random act of kindness, and I am trying to commit them myself as often as I can – I had to get bloods taken a couple of weeks ago, and when I arrived at pathology, the waiting room was full and the nurse looked a little flustered. “I’ll come back in ten minutes, okay?” I said and headed off to buy atomic strength coffee. While waiting for my cup of java, it occurred to me that the nurse might like some too, so I ordered a cappuccino to go. She was so surprised by my gesture and started smiling and thanked me profusely. We both had a laugh as she took my blood sample, and I enjoyed the feeling of having improved someone else’s day – WIN WIN!!!!

I still smile when I think about it. It is a building with a LOT of people. Never seen the guy before, may never see him again. Hope his kindness rubs off and we all start doing it for each other, be nice wouldn’t it?

And this is why I do random nice things, just to put a smile on someone’s face.
Thank you kind stranger who assisted Kelley.
My mum used to say “if you see someone without a smile, give them one of yours.”
Rather glad Boo didn’t melt down this morning.

I love that guy. I always open the door for people with their hands full, whether they are young, old, female, male – it’s just nice. And I always (now) make the effort to smile, and make eye contact with people who serve me in shops, because I know that sometimes just a smile can make a difference to the way people feel. Just like someone being snarky or mean can break you. I’m glad that guy changed your day.

Yeah, I always try and make the effort and a lot of times people just think I am a crazy lady 🙂 but I hope that I make someone’s day.

I guess it is those of us that need it most that know to do it, eh?

I try and be that nice man. So glad you had a nice day. Meanwhile I am in a filthy mood, I no longer want to parent. It’s too hard. I give up.

Oh my beautiful, I hope you are in a better mood today. We all have days like that when those crotch parasites get on our last nerve. I swear to god I nearly got on a plane yesterday to go and strangle my eldest yesterday and she is 24 and lives 600ks away. One day we will be in the same room and we can raise a glass and toast that we have survived each day my friend. X
