Long time coming. Best day ever.

by Kelley

in Autism,Happy happy joy joy,nerf bullets will survive the apocalypse and the world will be inhabited by cockroaches toting nerf guns

After 2 years of planning today we stole borrowed MOTY’s car* and went on a road trip to see Moo in the city.

{he kept changing his mind WHEN, so it ended up being after the holidays}

Seems so insignificant to some, but a HUGE deal to us.

You see, Boo has never been to the city.  The noises and smells and sights and NOISES would send him into all sorts of freaking the freak out.

And who wants to travel a couple of hours in the car only to have to turn around and come home with a wildcat in the backseat?

No one, that’s who.

So we had to wait till he was ready.

And today, finally, he was ready.

We had breakfast on the road:

next time it will be IN OUR OWN AWESOME NEW TO US CAR HUZZAH!

We went to Moo’s house.

And then Toys R Us:

I hope the poor fucker that has to clean up this section gets double. And that there are no dirty nappies in there.

HOLY SHIT.  Seriously people suck, right?

And we tried to go out for lunch but Boo turned to me and said ‘I miss my home’

And his lip quivered a little.

So, wrapped arm in arm with his sister we returned to the car.

{it took us longer to find a park than we spent in the actual shopping centre but I am still seeing it as a win}

And back to Moo’s place to pick up our shit and go home.

We stopped at Chadstone shopping centre for a latte, a pork bun and a little bit of fan boi-ing.

an actual genius walks into a genius bar... 'They don't serve drinks here Boo...' 'Dammit!'

He was beyond adorable sitting there watching the geniuses at work absorbing a little of the Mac-mostphere.

His father was so proud.

And now we are home.

After approximately 5 hours in the car, Boo is pacing around the house and listing all the Nerf guns that he saw at Toys R Us and that we have to purchase ASAP and answered my question:

‘Did you have a good day’

with a break in his soliloquy to mutter

‘Yep’

I take that as the best freaking day EVER**.

HUZZAH!

* we have to take all her rubbish to the dump as payment but TOTALLY worth it

** he is now being a total butthead but that is to be expected.

I cried when I came across your story. As a mum of three autistic boys they were tears of understanding but mostly pride. You did it. As parents you did it and Boo did it too. No one understands how much a trip to the city or just a friends place ( or even to get a carton of milk) is taken for granted till you try and do them things with an autistic child. Ty for sharing such a beautiful story. You did it.
Much love.
