Hey Mummy.

by Kelley

in Autism

You stand before me.

Trying to make conversation.  But it is the same questions and same answers as always.

But you look deep into my eyes.  Like you always have.

Hey Mummy.

Yes, my beautiful?

What weapon will your Ranger have?

I sit on the couch, you sit beside me with your head on my lap.

I cup your face in my hands and my heart swells with love as you look up at me.

Deep into my eyes.  Like you always have.

Hey Mummy?

Yes, Boo?

What is your favourite scene in my movie?

Same questions.  Same answers.

Some days it is tiring.  Some days I just wish that you would talk about something else.

But you look deep into my eyes as you talk, it is not the words it is the connection.

The desperate need for connection, conversation, interaction.

The very things that those experts said don’t wish for.

Well fuck you experts, my Rangers weapon is a Phoenix Bazooka and it will blow you away.

It is stories like yours that make me realise that the so-called experts really don’t know what they are talking about when it comes to autism.

You are the expert Kells, not those people with a degree. All that shows is they know how to retain information.

You live in a world they will never fully understand.

I get this with my Aspies girl-child. Same thing over and over. Confirmation of the same things. Then I realise she needs my confirmations – it makes her feel safe. Besides, its what SHE wants to talk about, its what she can communicate about.

Last time I tried to leave a comment, your blog went down. I hope it wasn’t my fault. All I said was “Dammit, now I have something in my eye… Sniffle.”
Also, what Ro said. And Laura.

It seems to me that in this case, it’s the parents who’ve done almost all of it. Found a way to let their kids defy the expectations.

I met a woman, here in Ireland where you have to take the govt to court to get care and education etc for your autistic child, she’d been through all that.

But first of all, when her two year old suddenly stopped making eye contact with her, and all the other things that come with autism, she went to the specialist, the most expert expert in Dublin. And he said, you have two healthy children, Mrs Firtzgerald. This one will never talk, or interact with you. You have two healthy girls, Mrs Fitzgerald, go home and parent them.

She prefaced all this by showing us pictures of her beautiful, healthy, smiling, five year old sliding down a slide. She’d given up her job, and converted her garage to a class room, and paid for special school an hour and a half away and so on, but she’d proved the expert wrong…

I’ve run into those experts as well, and what I’ve found is; because a parent is emotionally invested, they do more research, look for answers and not reasons, and they put the effort of hope in EVERY DAY.
Yes, fuck the experts; those who only tell you what you can’t accomplish, rather than congratulate you on what you have.

That’s been the bane of my existence. The constant repetitive conversations. It’s slowly starting to get better. I don’t know that it’ll ever be all gone. But it’s something I’m learning to embrace as just one of those quirky things about my son.

And like you said, that connection is there.
