If you have been following me on twitter or facebook you will know that The Damn Emos are going through exams.
I am freaking the fuck out, they, on the other hand, are all meh.
Which makes me freak the fuck out all the more.
When I did my final year exams it was the old system, the first year of the new system, but in name only.
{confused yet? Wait, it is gunna get worse}
The final year was just that, a final year. One year and your end of year exam was 70% of your mark. Fuck that up and you might as well go and slit your wrists now cause you will NEVER AMOUNT TO ANYTHING!!!!
So the new system was introduced. Where you get your Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) over 2 years, years 11 and 12. And you sit mini exams throughout the year.
Way betterer.
But.
To add to the confusion of my poor widdle mind, The Damn Emos are in a special accelerated program. Essentially they skipped the first year of high school and then were accelerated through the course work until they get to yr 10. When it gets so fucking confusing it makes me wanna cry.
Too is in year 10 this year. But she is really in year 11. But not. So she is kinda doing her final years subjects but kinda not and she has 2 sets of exams, some important, some if you turn up and write your name on the top of the sheet you like pass and shit.
So for the really important exams she got like a DAYS notice. For the turn up and write your name exams she gets 2 weeks off to study…
*rock rock rock*
And now she has to determine what subjects she will do next year. And then add to the mix that she wants to do 4 year 12 subjects (like she has always done, a year higher work) and they are all ‘well no’ and she is all ‘well WHY THE HELL NOT’ and I am caught in the middle. She has already done year 11 Biology and Literature, so that is a given, but she wants to skip a year of Art and Maths and that is where the school is all ‘whoa Nelly!’ and I am scratching my head. Cause HER TEACHERS suggested she do it.
So tomorrow, while Moo is sitting YET ANOTHER FUCKING EXAM START FREAKING THE FUCK OUT NOW!!! while she calmly plays Sims3, I have to call the year level coordinator and plead Too’s case without fully grasping the situation.
And the school politics behind it.
Moo has Friday and Monday exams and then it is ALL OVER.
Too has already had 3 exams and has another 3 in a few weeks.
Nearly over. Nearly over.
No wonder I have a fucking ulcer.

the test to get in to the accelerated program could be to explain how the program works. The girls will be fine. As you would know your high school marks matter so little in life. And you would only to console yourself with this fact, if they weren’t going to do well. Which they aren’t. They will do great because surely they are as smart as their mummy. You don’t need to go guns blazing to the school do you? You can simply ask for them to explain Too’s current and future situation to you.

Having read this I’m now utterly and hopelessly confused (not hard to do, admittedly) but I think what I can glean from it all is to wish the Emos good luck on their exams, so:

Hopefully there is a special ed teacher who can explain it. At our school, the special ed teacher coordinates any student with special needs – from those who are Olympic athletes and need a modified program for training to those girls doing university subjects (whcih Moo and Too will no doubt do in Yr 11 nad 12) to those students who are struggling. At any rate, their job is to modify work programs to accomodate students who don’t fit the mainstream and are usually the best person to explain the craziness.

Then go down to the school and dump a bucket of cold latte over the teacher.

I have no fucking idea what you said. Like – that’s the first time anyone has ever spelled out, for me, what VCE means. As for the rest of it – I’m lost. But then – you said POLITICS … I guess that’s the reason … never could get my head around shit like that anyway.

Both of my daughters were in Advanced Placement classes in high school (which I think is the American version of what you are talking about here) In that program, if they pass the courses in high school, they get college credit for them, so the more AP classes they take, the better off and ahead of things they are when they get to college. They were the same way about testing as Moo and Too–they never studied, just walked in and aced the tests.
I think the kids are smart enough to handle it all, so stop worrying about it. Things could be so much worse–they could be doing drugs, in trouble with the law, having multiple babies and bringing them home for you to take care of–but they are not. They are proving themselves to be intelligent, capable young women who are ready for the world. Just like their Mummy.

Tom1 finished on Wednesday, so he went guitar shopping in the city yesterday to celebrate.
Too’s situation is probably school policy… at our school we don’t let a year 11 kid do more than 2 year 12 subjects… they tend to burn themselves out by the middle of year 12 if they overload themselves. They have no idea of the pressure that year 12 subjects put on the kids. (And teachers, might I add?)

Wow. In Florida we just screen them for metal in their pockets, and that’s the toughest test they get on most days.
I got lost somewhere around the Year 11 but in Year 10 but not in Year 10 but doing Year 12 maybe but not bit. o.O
