On Friday I went to pick up Boo, just like I do on every school day.
Derr.
Anyway, I was standing out the front holding court talking to some of the mums, when Boo burst out the door and flung himself at me with a big smile on his face.
‘Tell mum your good news!’ The teacher called from the door way.
Boo spun around and looked at her ‘What is my good news again?’
Stage whispers ensued and Boo was smiling from ear to ear.
‘I got my pen licence!’
‘AWESOME! High five me buddy!’
High fives with a little palm tickling, as you do when you are hip and happenin’ like me and my Boo.
Boo turned to his teacher, ‘But you spelt it WRONG’
I look at the teacher and she looks at me. ‘But I double checked it! I even pulled out my drivers licence to make SURE it was correct!’
How fucking awesome is it when your 10 year old has his teacher freaking out about her spelling?
So when I got home I googled ‘licence/license’ and will be sending this little note to the teacher. Checked by Boo for spelling, grammar and accuracy of course…
In US English both the noun and the verb are spelt License. In Commonwealth/British English the noun is usually spelt Licence and the verb License, although the Oxford English Dictionary does allow License as a noun. The change from s to c to distinguish the noun from the verb is also seen in other words such as: advice (noun) vs advise (verb) and practice (noun) vs practise (verb). The advice/advise pair can be used as an aide-memoire as they are generally not confused because they have different pronunciation. Devise and device follow the same rule.
So they are both correct. Considering Boo is French Japanese Israeli with an American accent.
Yay Boo for getting your pen licence. This is a HUGE achievement considering only a year ago he was writing in font.
*sniff*
My boy is growing up.

YAYYY BOO!!!!
That is a huge achievement. My Moo never actually got his, as noone in the old school could be bothered working with him to get him to write anything or read anything, they just took it for granted that the kid with the 150+ IQ was totally dumb, even though he had memorised the entire Harry Potter series (and considering only the first two had been made into movies back then, they should have realised he had READ the books to be able to quote them!!!). So he is now at a good school, but as he didnt get pen licence (is that the right spelling for this usage??) in the correct year, they just dont worry, he can use whatever.
His sister has been informed she will be doing hers next year in year 3.

That’s an exciting development — I wonder if they do anything like that here in the states for elementary kids? Cool idea.

Congrats Boo! But remember, that pen license is a privilege, not a right. Notice the fine print. Keep calling out the teacher and your handwriting might “deteriorate.” Damn teachers always got us by the balls.

Easy way to remember: “ice”, frozen water, is a noun. “is” is a verb so “ise” would be a verb. Not very scientific but it works for me!
