Green is the word, the word that you heard.

by Kelley

in moments in mothering

She finally did it.

After months of umming and ahhing and apathy, Moo finally coloured her hair green.

Yes.  You read right.  Green.

Well apparently it is aqua… fuck that, it is GREEN.

Now don’t get me wrong.  I LOVE the colour green.  It is part of my blog colour scheme, my favourite Clinker and my favourite BAG and SHOES are that colour.

Just never thought that my child would match my shoes.

But there you go.

She went to the hairdresser to get chunks of hair bleached.  She came home ORANGE.  My girl is a natural dark blonde, but has – like her Mummy – dyed her hair dark dark brown.

Cause I am so fucking awesome, even the Emo’s are copying me.

So her roots were white, the ends because of the hair colour build up, were bright orange.

Like this:

ranga.jpg

‘I’m a ‘ranga Mum!’

We mixed together the BRIGHT BLUE and YELLOW permanent hair dyes and once we found a shade she was happy with, we slapped it on her hair, wrapped her up in tin foil and hoped for the best.

I jumped on Twitter:

 twit-hair.jpg

MPS reckoned it would turn brown.

Time was up and with trepidation we rinsed her hair.  As she blow waved it I held my breath…

Green.

She was over the moon.  Weird freaking Emos.

So now she has a new name.  One that suits her perfectly.

Green, yes, that is not my chosen color, but there is a color out there for each of us. I of course can’t NOT dye my hair either, and I figure, if you are gonna pay for it, might as well get a change here and there a long the way!

Good for her to have the confidence! She must have that from her mother.

2 Lilacspecs August 22, 2008 at 11:14 pm

No pics?? Oh come ON woman! Just take it above the scalp, no need to see her face or anything.

3 lceel August 22, 2008 at 11:33 pm

“It ain’t easy bein’ green”, So sayeth that wise sage, kermit the Frog.

By ‘Clinker’ – I DO hope you’re referring to the Australian candy and not the American ‘clinker’, which is … nevermind.

4 GoaldeeBug August 22, 2008 at 11:43 pm

AWESOME! You girls totally rule!

5 Tara R. August 22, 2008 at 11:49 pm

You are awesome! Green is the new blonde. Still want to see pix.

6 Bettina August 22, 2008 at 11:50 pm

Someone had to mention Kermit didn’t they.

I don’t have anything remotely intelligible to say now

7 Sarah August 23, 2008 at 12:07 am

The ONLY color I havent had my hair is blonde. I’ve been pink, orange, green, blue, black, brown, red….you name it. But I somehow wasnt Emo. Just odd I guess.

Now, I’m boring. =)

8 Xbox4NappyRash August 23, 2008 at 12:12 am

At what age is it too late to give them up for adoption?

9 VE August 23, 2008 at 12:26 am

You should show her. Die your hair ‘clear’

10 Laura August 23, 2008 at 12:29 am

I completely understand. My son (now 22) had hair of all colours too, for years!

He had a 17 inch mohawk with spikes, and given that he is 6 feet 5inches plus change it was a pretty intimidating sight! It was all colours (sometimes alternating colours on the spikes) and went from turquoise, aqua, red, purple, black, green, blonde and chocolate brown. He was renowned in the area for his appearance, but like a true Mummy I used to worry he would be beaten up. (what a ditz I was)People would gasp and wait for him to hassle me when he loomed up over me at the central train station, then visibly sigh with relief (and wonder) when they realised the beast had a Mum who he would greet with a kiss. He would hold friendly conversations too – he just LOOKED scary. Punk scary, definitely not self-indulgent angsty emo scary!

Finally he got sick of all the upkeep (plus it was hard for him to fit in the car without poking the driver in the eye) and we spiked it up one last time and photographed me cutting the spikes off in 5 big snips, with before and after shots. He looks gorgeous without it all spikey too, but sadly is going pretty thin on top which was noticeable from the moment we cut it short.

Ah those were the days. Thanx for the memories

11 Burgh Baby August 23, 2008 at 12:44 am

My best friend in high school died her beautiful blond hair purple. Barney purple. Her mother cried and cried, which of course just led to her dying it blue. Smurf blue. You’re very wise to go with the flow.

12 Ree August 23, 2008 at 1:13 am

I have a consult with a wig maker tomorrow. I’m going to ask him for green.

13 O'Neal August 23, 2008 at 1:56 am

Wow, I am convinced you are the coolest Mom ever!

My mom screamed at me when I did it, “Green? Fucking green??? The whole GD bathroom is green now and tomorrow is Thanksgiving!!!”. <—Not the coolest Mom ever.

You rock!!!

14 Solomon@ThingsI'mGratefulFor August 23, 2008 at 3:35 am

I’d love to have green hair. I’d match my car.

15 Jenty August 23, 2008 at 4:53 am

Hee hee!! Love it!! At least she wasn’t too upset about the experiment!

16 Mom Ink August 23, 2008 at 5:12 am

Are you a fan of Project Runway? Heada Lettuce anyone?

Hair is fun. Good on ya for helping her experiment.

17 mp August 23, 2008 at 5:26 am

18 Mr Lady August 23, 2008 at 8:51 am

20 Jayne August 23, 2008 at 10:51 am

Feral Queen is a natural blonde and has blonde re-growth through her black hair LOL.

She hasn’t gone green but has flirted with blue at times :P

21 A Whole Lot of Hooch August 23, 2008 at 11:38 am

Dear Jeebus & Oprah,

I pray that I am as cool as Kelley when my girls want to color their hair every color of the rainbow.

And while I’m at it, I pray the ‘emo’ trend ends in less than 5 years and nerds become cool.

Love & kisses,

Hooch

22 Jim August 23, 2008 at 11:49 am

Woo hoo! Good for her. Sorry, it just takes me back to my punk days.

23 anja August 23, 2008 at 12:03 pm

I’ve gone blue, but never green.

We want pictures!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

24 Shamelessly Sassy August 23, 2008 at 1:16 pm

Emo the grouch is the best nickname ever. Also, it would be fantastic if she would let you take a pic of the back of her head so that we could see the color. I’m sort of excited about it.

25 Kiki August 23, 2008 at 1:33 pm

I’m 39 and jealous. I totally want bright pink OR bright orange hair.

But green.. that’s just nuts.

26 Latte Mommy August 23, 2008 at 1:40 pm

This makes your plurking of the Kermit video this morning all that more funny. :)

27 Mrs. Schmitty August 23, 2008 at 1:59 pm

You are the coolest mama! I just hope I can bite my tongue enough when my oldest boy wants to start dyeing his hair. Because I know he’ll be the one that wants to do it! UGH…can’t they stay babies forever?!

28 Kel August 23, 2008 at 2:06 pm

Awesome mom skills there!

What advice do you have for a mom of an emo-like daughter who wants to paint her room all black with blood red accents? Oh, and we rent.

29 cajunvegan August 23, 2008 at 2:09 pm

As a middle school disciplinarian in the 5th largest district in the United States who must uphold the district’s dress code which outlaws any hair color not of a natural hue, I must ask: can she go to school with green hair? Cool.

30 Andrew Boyd August 23, 2008 at 6:06 pm

Kelley,

you rock. That is it, nothing more to say. You rock :)

Cheers, Andrew

31 magneto bold too! August 23, 2008 at 7:35 pm

Susanna: Took her 3 months to get up the courage AND it is only chunks :)

Lilacspecs: Have asked and she is all ‘OK, whatevz’ so will have one soon. Will update the post when I do.

lceel: I am well aware of the American clinker. I get searches of various vomit causing forms every day…

Goaldeebug: Was there any doubt?

Tara R: Will do.

Bettina: Nah, I prefer Oscar anyway.

Sarah: girl, me too. I once had a blonde streak. But ever since I could dye it I have been various shades other than my own.

BoxBoy: You offering?

VE: Bwaaaa haaaa haaaaaaaaa!

Laura: What an awesome story! Sometimes the freakiest out there looking people are the biggest softies :)

Burgh Baby: Too has purple hair. Has had it for a year. *snort*

Ree: AWESOME! I can totally see you rocking green.

O’Neal: I would have kicked your arse. Only for the mess in the bathroom though.

Solomon: My car is white. I am almost there.

Jenty: God knows what would have happened if it didn’t turn out. Hell fire I imagine.

Mom Ink: nah, haven’t seen it, but I can imagine :)

mp: No I didn’t. I flirted with the whole Thompson Twins look, but never went that far.

Mr Lady: But aren’t your walls and bathroom wearing it?

Lightening: Waiting for the offers of cash.

Jayne: You want the name of the dye then?

Hooch: Hate to break it to you babe, Emo is just ‘teenager’. I was an Emo, my girls are Emo, my grandchildren will be Emo…

Jim: Awesome! You were a punk? A nice punk I hope ;)

Anja: Cash or charge?

Shamelessly Sassy: It is only at the front. Will have a pic up soon. Soon as you lot line my palm with silver… ;)

Kiki: Do it. I DARE you *snigger*

Latte Mommy: That was awesome wasn’t it? For everyone else it was Talking Heads ‘Once in a lifetime’ by Kermit. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-jbya4kxC6E

Mrs Schmitty: Alas no. Boo is almost as tall as me now.

Kel: Let her do one wall in black material. You can get a couple of black queen sized sheets and tack them up with 3M removeable hooks.

cajunvegan: My girls are on very good terms with the principal. She loves them. They get away with murder. It is teh awesome.

Andrew: as do you.

32 Naomi August 23, 2008 at 7:49 pm

Gals, the only way I’ve discovered to stop teens dyeing their hair is to dye your own weird colours. Turns some of them off it _completely_. Of course, then they just have to find other ways to rebel ;-)

Kel – just wait a damn minute. PERMANENT blue and yellow colouring? I’m drooling. All I have are these pokey lil wash-out-in-a-week thingies. And it’s hard work upkeeping a do that’ll properly traumatise a 12yo!

33 Xbox4NappyRash August 23, 2008 at 8:07 pm

I’ll take her!

34 Jim August 23, 2008 at 11:47 pm

Always a nice punk ;) Just occasionally aloof…and that hole in the cheek healed up fine thanks.

35 colbymarshall August 24, 2008 at 1:05 am

I should tell my parents about this one- it might make them see that my pink hair isn’t so bad after all.

36 Stella-Mountain Momma August 24, 2008 at 8:10 am

I’m excited at the prospect of a picture!!

I never made it to green…went as far as orange and yellow and stopped.

She rocks!

37 Solomon@ThingsI'mGratefulFor August 24, 2008 at 9:01 am

I have a little something for you on my blog. Please stop by and pick it up. :)

38 Sandy (Momisodes) August 24, 2008 at 12:00 pm

LMAO at the Oscar do ;)

No pic, woman!? A strand or two?

Humph!

*stomps foot and crosses arms*

39 river August 24, 2008 at 1:14 pm

To Kel:- for your daughter’s room, hook up curtain rods just under the cornice and hang black sheets or curtains all around the walls. That would satisfy her and the tiny holes left after you remove the rods (when you leave) are easily filled.

3 of my kids dye their hair often, have done since they were 13 or so. Doesn’t bother me at all. It’s their hair and it is only hair.

40 Maria August 24, 2008 at 2:51 pm

Emo the Grouch. I choked on my Dr. Pepper at that. THANK YOU. Now I must have my keyboard cleaned.

41 Melain August 24, 2008 at 5:00 pm

OH. MY. GOD. Emo the Grouch?!!! That is going to have me randomly snort-laughing my beverages for a week!

42 tiff August 24, 2008 at 10:23 pm

I bow down to you yoda!

43 Kylie August 25, 2008 at 5:31 pm

I’m totally going to have a shirt made up “Emo the Grouch”! LOVE IT!

I read this whole post to my husband and daughter and my daughter said “THAT’S how they do it. They bleach it first!”

So, we may have some green hair around here soon.

44 Laura August 25, 2008 at 11:22 pm

To follow up the story, on the school thing…his principal on seeing him the first day of the new year said – “Is he wearing his school uniform? Yes? Oh fine, I see no harm in some self-expression.”

He still (age 22) has ZERO tats, and ZERO piercings. It was his way. It IS only hair after all. When he did a school play in Y12 and played the suave 60’s sophisticate he wore a suit and we styled The Hair (washed and undyed) in a comb-over. Brought the house down!
